Reflexology
Reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the hands, feet and ears which correspond to every part, gland and organ of the body. Through application of pressure on these reflexes, reflexology relieves tension, improves circulation and promotes the natural function of the body.
The responses you feel from reflexology will depend upon many factors such as your current state of health, whether you have an acute situation or suffer from a chronic problem. The benefits that most people experience with reflexology include:
- general relaxation and release of tension. Generally, people feel very mellow and easy going for at least a couple of hours after a session. They also tend to sleep better the night after a session.
- improved circulation, especially in the extremities. This is particularly helpful for diabetics and those with circulatory problems, as well as inflammation in muscles and tendons.
- improved digestion and bowel function. People tending towards constipation notice results more quickly than the reverse condition. If the condition is chronic, don't expect great results immediately. Reflexology is considered cumulative, in other words you will notice more benefits over time when you receive regular sessions.
Guidelines to be considered when setting a treatment schedule would include your current state of health, your goal, time commitment and costs. A trained reflexologist will discuss all of these important factors when helping you decide what will work best for you.
Are you wondering what to expect when you book a session in hand or foot reflexology? (Note: We do not currently offer ear reflexology at the Centre). You will be invited into a quiet room with relaxing music playing quietly in the background. You may be shown to a massage table or a reclining chair to make yourself comfortable. You will probably be asked to remove your shoes even for the hand session for comfort and cleanliness, shoes and socks for a foot session. No other articles of clothing need be removed. You will be covered by a sheet or blanket as most people start to feel cool as the session progresses and you start to relax. The practitioner will take a health history in order to assess your current state of health, your goals in receiving reflexology and to determine which reflexes to pay additional attention to during a session. Most people equate the sensations they feel to 'a bruised feeling that feels good to be rubbed'. Occasionally reflexes when touched can feel like an electrical shock and, rarely, some are actually quite tender. The trained reflexologist will adjust pressure based on your sensitivity levels.
